Nicobass' Tomb Raider 2 Remake Released!!!

20 years after the release of the second Tomb Raider game, Nicobass has granted fans' wishes and has brought us his own next generation remake, of the first section to be precise, set in and around the illustrious Great Wall of China. A project that started in early 2016, a group of Tomb Raider community members from the world over teamed up to make this happen; with Jennifer Milward being the voice of Lara Croft, Alexandre Serel writing the script and Dean Kopri composing the incredible score. Also, the beautiful background on the main menu and loading screens are by our very talented header designer, Inna Vjuzhanina.

A fanmade level on this scale has never before been seen and this has created a huge buzz amongst the fans, embracing it as if it were an official title. In the first 24 hours alone, the download link crashed as a result of too much traffic!

It's certainly a work of art from start to finish with rich and beautifully realistic enviroments, complex  puzzles and extremely hidden secrets! The play style is very much inspired by Crystal Dynamics' pre-reboot games, as if it follows on from Tomb Raider: Anniversary, but with more obscure pathways.

If you have a PC or if you watch a playthrough video, you're in for a treat!
You can download the level on the website here.

TDD's Top 5 Tomb Raider Cosplay Performances

Cosplay is one of the most prominent creative outlets in the Tomb Raider community.
It shows fans from all over the world that they can transform into their hero, no matter who they are.
From this comes countless different takes on that character where we are freed from the official "canon".
A good example of that is when cosplayers take part in friendly competition with performances.
With great difficulty, we have narrowed down five of our favourite Tomb Raider cosplay performances to showcase, otherwise we'll be here all day!
So, without further ado....

The evolution of Lara Croft feauturing French cosplayers Lili Dîn as Young Lara Croft from The Last Revelation, Julie Peugeot (AKA CosplayLaraCroft) as Classic Lara and Manou (AKA Kyrati Couture) as Tomb Raider Underworld Lara.
We love this nostalgic concept and the wonderful costumes! Not to mention Julie's kick-butt moves!

The Angel of Darkness - *Sigh* Why can't these two ever get along?
Despite a couple of wardrobe malfunctions, the great performances from Ukrainian cosplayers Tanya Croft and her boyfriend Alex as Lara and Kurtis Trent combined with very impressive combat kept us engaged from beginning to end!

Ever wondered what would happen if Lara wandered into Mortal Kombat? Well, you're about to find out! All these cosplayers stayed in character the whole time, up until the moment they took a bow in front of a well received audience.
Besides, who doesn't love crossovers?
Featuring Tif (AKA Illyne) as Guardian of Light Lara, Hervé Juncker as SubZero and Jonathan (AKA Cosplay Quest) as Scorpion at Paris Manga 2011.

Tomb Raider: Underworld - This is possibly the closest to a professional stunt show than any other cosplay performance we've seen!
Very tight choreography and dramatic scenes from Italian cosplayers Virginia (AKA JillStyler) as Lara and Selene as the Doppelgänger.
There's no wonder they won "Best Choreography"!

Reboot Lara discovers the hard way that her past isn't going away so easily!
Our #1 favourite has to be this original and creative performance by Belgian cosplayers Visual Aurelie and Marine (AKA Tsukichan Cosplay). Very fitting for the 20th anniversary last year and leaves a die hard fan with all the feels!!
Well deserved win in the group category!

Lara Croft Models: Where are they now?

In 1996, during the promotion of the first Tomb Raider game, four models including Katie Price were hired by Eidos to dress as Lara Croft at ECTS (European Computer Trade Show - the UK's largest gaming convention at the time) to pose with fans and give out goodies. Following it's popularity, one of those models, Natalie Cook, soon became the face of the new fictional heroine every gamer loved and therefore set the mark for a new initiative for live-action Laras which would go on until 2010.
In this article, we explore what happened to those eight ladies since donning the iconic ensemble.

There is very little information about Natalie Cook after she retired from tomb raiding but in November 2016 for the franchise's 20th anniversary, she was a special guest at Play Expo in Manchester, UK, for which she wore her original costume and took photos with fans on both days. She was also a judge in the cosplay competition.

Here she is posing with our very own Kate Sykes!

Don't think we need to tell you what happened to English actress Rhona Mitra's career after she hung up her Lara boots but incase you missed it...
Mitra dove into playing a long string of strong female characters in films such as "Shooter",  "Doomsday", "Underworld: Rise of the Lycans" and "Hard Target 2".
She has also acted in a number of TV series, her most recent role being Dr. Rachel Scott in "The Last Ship".
From left to right: Doomsday, Underworld: Rise of the Lycans, Strike Back, Hard Target 2.
Find out more on her IMDb page.

McAndrew had a successful career in glamour modelling following being "Tomb Raider III"'s official model. She was a TV presenter on "Racing Rivals", "Born to Fight", "It's a Knockout" and "The Big Breakfast".
Moving into fitness, McAndrew made a few instruction videos, the first of which "Peak Energy", released in 2002, became a best seller.
She has run in many a marathon and for the 2008 Great North Run, she even dressed as Wonder Woman for charity. In March 2012, McAndrew became the first woman to cross the finish line in the National Lottery Olympic Park Run.
Last year, she released "Nell McAndrew's Guide to Running".

Again, it's unclear what Lara Weller has been doing in the years before and after the 10th anniversary photoshoot with four of the other Lara models but that same year, she stepped back into the Croft persona to help a friend open his game shop MadForce and did an informal interview reflecting on her days in the role.

See's exclusive video here...

The youngest of the models, taking on the role at the age of just 17, Clarkson said in an intervew with GameTap that she "modelled herself on Lara Croft".
Having suffered from an eating disorder, she became a spokeswoman againgst "size zero" and a campaigner for healthy living.
She was a regular presenter on BBC News 24 and is a celebrity patron for SPANA (Society for the Protection of Animals Abroad).
Lucy now lives in Miami where she is still modelling and does fitness instruction.
She sings too. You can listen to her cover of the Spice Girls' "2 Become 1" here...
Last year, in full Lara style, Lucy accepted a challenge from This is Fashionable to learn how to power surf!

Jill de Jong moved to the US and aside from modelling, ventured into acting, appearing in several commercials which you can see some of in her showreel here...
She also starred in an independant film about a female assassin entitled "Jillian".
De Jong then moved to focus on models' well being and founded the "Models Do Eat" initiative, providing food recipes and health coaching.
For this, she interviewed non other than Lucy Clarkson whom she struck up a friendship with after they met up in their home state of Miami.

Then known as Karima Adebibe, she took on the role following the development take-over from Crystal Dynamics.
The first speaking Lara who did training in fire-arms and in combat with the SAS, she promoted Legend and the 10th anniversary remake of the first game.
After that, she continued modelling and also appeared in "Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows" and "Vikings".
She turned to focus on her acting career, studying in New York City and is currently attending LAMDA (London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art).
Very recently, she played the role of Miriam Attar in the ITV drama, "Fearless"
in which she acted alongside Helen McCrory.

Known as "the live-action Lara Croft", action being the key word, Carroll incorporated her years of gymnastics experience into the role with a special routine she performed in character while on tour.
After over 2 years as the final model, she continued her passion for acting, appearing in "The Kid" and "The Gridiron". She also starred in independent films, "Live is an Art" and "Amsterdam Heavy".
She also founded "The Lightning School of Gymnastics" and choreographed the winning junior team at the British National Championships.

You may see her as another certain action herione...

Most recently, she did the motion-capture for the main character of Aloy in the PS4 game "Horizon: Zero Dawn".

We think it's clear to see that aspects of who Lara Croft is have rubbed off on these ladies' lives and careers in one way or another.

Who was your favourite model? Let us know!

January 2017
Message to mark the start of filming in Cape Town, South Africa, on 23rd January 2017.
Message from producer and director.
Birthday wishes for Lara on 14th February with a shot of the leading lady's on set chair.
MARCH 2017
The first official in character photos of Alicia Vikander were released!
The costume is very similar to that in the 2013 game but perhaps more practical for the stunts Vikander had to do and now with a quiver that fastens around the waist.
We even see her holding the red Rebel climbing axe. In any case, she looks like she's not to be messed with!

The photos were accompanied by the film's synopsis...
"Lara Croft is the fiercely independent daughter of an eccentric adventurer who vanished when she was scarcely a teen. Now a young woman of 21 without any real focus or purpose, Lara navigates the chaotic streets of trendy East London as a bike courier, barely making the rent, and takes college courses, rarely making it to class. Determined to forge her own path, she refuses to take the reins of her father’s global empire just as staunchly as she rejects the idea that he’s truly gone. Advised to face the facts and move forward after seven years without him, even Lara can’t understand what drives her to finally solve the puzzle of his mysterious death.
Going explicitly against his final wishes, she leaves everything she knows behind in search of her dad’s last-known destination: a fabled tomb on a mythical island that might be somewhere off the coast of Japan. But her mission will not be an easy one; just reaching the island will be extremely treacherous. Suddenly, the stakes couldn’t be higher for Lara, who—against the odds and armed with only her sharp mind, blind faith and inherently stubborn spirit—must learn to push herself beyond her limits as she journeys into the unknown. If she survives this perilous adventure, it could be the making of her, earning her the name tomb raider.

From Warner Bros. Pictures and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures, “Tomb Raider” is the story that will set a young and resolute Lara Croft on a path toward becoming a global hero.
The film stars Oscar winner Alicia Vikander (“Ex Machina,” “The Danish Girl”) in the lead role, under the direction of Roar Uthaug (“The Wave”), with Oscar-winner Graham King (“The Departed”) producing under his GK Films banner. The film’s production begins on the heels of the 20th anniversary of the wildly popular videogame franchise from Square Enix, Crystal Dynamics and Eidos Montreal."

Seasoned composer, James Newton Howard (Sixth Sense, The Dark Knight, Maleficent, The Hunger Games and many more!) was also announced to be doing the film's score.

APRIL 2017
Glympse of a new character?...
Wrap on actor, Alexandre Willaume.
MAY 2017
Last day on set for actor, Daniel Wu.
Marking the end of filming in South Africa.
Now we have heard rumours that Alicia Vikander has been seen doing cycling scenes in the streets of London and at what looks to be the new Croft Manor; old Tudor mansion, Wilton House...

Certainly looks the part, don't you think?

Tomb Raider Live in Concert!

It's been a while since my last post as exciting non Tomb Raider adventures have kept me busy but after my break, I wanted to write about one of the most special experiences I had last fact, that I've ever had!
2016 was a wonderful anniversary year for Tomb Raider. It was also incredble for me personally.
This is one of the reasons why...

The weekend before Christmas was the world premiere of Nathan McCree's Tomb Raider Suite, the original score from the first three games with some extended pieces performed by the London Philharmonic Concert Orchestra at the Hammersmith Apollo. It saw a pilgrimage of Tomb Raider fans from all over the world just for this event.

This was my experience...
We arrived at our hotel about 9pm after a five hour drive from Cumbria. Entering the lobby, we were greeted by an array of lights, Christmas decorations and pearly white trees.

The next morning, we got ready to join Meagan Marie (Senior Community Manager at Crystal Dynamics) and some other community members at the British Museum. I dressed in a casual version of the Tomb Raider Legend Kazakhstan outfit. We decided last minute to take a bus. We had no idea what we were doing and when we finally got one and I parked myself in the wheelchair spot, we had to get off because we didn't have a travel card. Eventually, we got on our way and we were treated to central London's amazing views at Christmas time.
My first experience on a London bus!

We passed incredible and quite imposing statues, the biggest shops had amazing window displays and the Marks & Spencer building was covered in lights which showed presents showering down from all sides and then transitioned into "Merry Christmas".

We arrived at the museum, a beautiful and enormous building!

As we were about 40 minutes late, we had to go looking for people - a rather difficult task in such a big place with rooms that split off every which way.
Everywhere we looked, there were stunning pieces of art from all ages and all cultures.
Eventually, I bumped into Augustin (cosplayer/artist) and his partner from France then as we were moving on, they called us back and I turned round to see Meagan coming towards us, waving. Then we got together with some of the others - some I knew their faces so well online and I was meeting them in person! It was very strange but wonderful!
Tomb Raider community at the British Museum.
There were 50 of us there in total but we stuck in the same group for the whole of the afternoon. One of those I met was the lovely Jessie TR (Brasilian official Lara Croft cosplay ambassador) who travelled all the way from Rio. She presented me with a gift - a Charlie Brown style Classic Lara mounted on a biro pen and the base being her boot and sock!
We have been friends online for a number of years so it was wonderful to finally meet each other in person!
Jessie and I.
After leaving the museum, we took the hour long bus ride back to our hotel with just enough time to have something to eat before the preshow Q&A with Nathan McCree started. I strapped on my empty holsters, put on my gloves and we walked around the corner to the theatre where "TOMB RAIDER LIVE IN CONCERT" was displayed in lights above the entrance.
For Tomb Raider China's "Travel with Lara Croft" competition.
As soon as we went in, the first person I saw in the queue was Linny (owner of Linny was the first person in the Tomb Raider community that I came in contact with in my early teens. It was actually her husband who spotted me first. We gave each other a big hug and chatted for a bit before heading into the foyer. I looked around for familiar faces and as my Dad went to get a drink, Marilena (Lady Crossader - German official Lara Croft cosplay ambassador) and Ani, a new cosplayer who I had previously spoken to online, came over to say hello. They were both wearing gorgeous evening gowns and I was beginning to feel a little underdressed in my winter adventuring gear.

We wandered around a little more and I found Tif (Illyne - French official Lara Croft cosplay ambassador), Manou (Luce - French official Lara Croft cosplay ambassador) and Chaiya (cosplayer and co-owner of Lovely to meet them at last!
From left to right: With Tif, Manou and Chaiya.
Then we were escorted to the wheelchair spot as I said hello to people along the way. After a couple of minutes, the Q&A started. Not far into it, I suddenly saw Julie Peugeot (French official Lara Croft cosplay ambassador) running across the stalls up to the wheelchair box. She threw her arms around me, kissing and stroking my head like a big sister and we didn't let go of each other for what felt like several minutes. Let me give you a bit of a backstory here...
When I first became a part of the Tomb Raider community almost 10 years ago, I had just dropped out of school and I was a beginner cosplayer in need of a direction and people to talk to. Julie found me on a fan forum and invited me to join her forum CosplayLaraCroft. I was the only foreign member at the time and the French cosplay community welcomed me with open arms. To this day, I still hold them close to my heart and so it was quite an emotional moment for Julie and I when we met.
She sat and talked to us for a bit and kept just staring at me to make sure I was real. She then brought her partner Jeremy (JohnnyPen Cosplay) over to meet us and they decided to abandon their seats to watch the concert with us. Jessie came over for a bit and Julie then went to find more people to ensure I crossed everyone off my list. She brought back a whole queue of people!

Just as everyone went back to their seats, the lights went down, the orchestra filed on stage and the ever so familiar melody of the original theme started to play. The sound radiated through the entire theatre and transformed the music as if you were hearing each piece for the first time with pictures and gameplay accompanying it on a big screen.
Julie and I kept looking at each other and smiling as we relived memories of our childhoods.

One of the highlights was seeing Winston, Lara's beloved butler (AKA the concert's producer), shuffle on stage with his tea tray as Shelley Blond (original voice of Lara and the concert's MC) was introducing the next video/piece.

After the show, Julie and I reluctantly said goodbye until next time...
Last photo with Julie and Jeremy (JohnnyPen Cosplay).
Next it was the after party! As the Apollo (previously called the Odeon) is a very old theatre, there isn't much disability access and the party was up two flights of stairs. My chair was too heavy to lift so my Super-Dad carried me up and purched me on one of the sofas by the bar...Don't get any ideas. I'm teetotal. 😉
That meant I missed the signings with Nathan McCree and Shelley Blond but Nathan came over to say hello later on. To my surprise, so many people from around the world knew who I was and came over to say how they liked my cosplay and reading my articles. It was quite surreal to say the least!

Most of us were carrying copies of Meagan Marie's "20 Years of Tomb Raider" book and we just spent the night passing them around for each other to sign. As well as spending time with friends, I also made new ones. It's truly a night I will never forget.

Just as we were leaving the theatre, we bumped into Audrey (Ivy) and Marine.
